Using a pay phone
Pay phones are easy to use. During business hours, in some countries, you can call from a phone inside the post office (called the “PTT”) and then pay the person at the counter when you are done. Or you can purchase a telephone card and make calls at any time from pay phones. The cards will allow calls to anywhere in the world but can only be used in pay phones in the country where you purchased the card.
Using a cell phone
GSM network is the standard in Turkey (3G is also available). If you want to use a cell phone during your trip, consider the following options:
1) Find a cellular phone service provider that has an agreement with service providers in Turkiye. There are 3 providers: TURKCELL, AVEA and VODAFONE.
2) Rent a cellular phone
3) Purchase a pre-pay card. It can be purchased at mobile phone service stores.
Emergency Phone Number
In Turkiye, the emergency phone number is 112, Police Emergency is 155 and Gendarmerie Emergency is 156 (there is no charge to call this number from a pay phone or mobile phone).
