Snowboard Techniques

 Sport overview

Developed in the United States in the 1960s, snowboarding combines the skills required for skiing, skateboarding and surfing. Snowboarders race down snow slopes on a ski-like board to which their feet are attached and perform stunts.

Snowboarding has a variety of different elements including downhill riding and racing, mogul techniques, tricks performed in half and quarter pipes and powder riding, when boarders use a surfing technique to carve tracks through deep, loose snow. Racing, known as alpine snowboarding, uses skills similar to downhill ski racing; competitors race against the clock on a giant slalom course. Parallel giant slalom consists of two boarders racing against each other on parallel courses.

Extreme snowboarding
Done on near vertical (45 degrees) mountain slopes with cliffs, deep snow, chutes and trees, extreme snowboarding is not for the faint hearted. Competitions include racing and freestyle events that involve courses up to 2000m with many obstacles. Entrants are judged on factors such as time and style.

Rider profile
Daring, self confidence and a sense of adventure are prerequisites for a snowboarder. Competitive riders need to be fit and flexible with strong muscles. As with any snow sport, balance, coordination and quick reactions are also vital. A flair for putting on a performance is an important quality in freestylers
